ABOUT

The Vanderbilt Equestrian Team founded in the fall of 1988. We are competitive in all hunt-seat divisions of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association, with riders ranging from those with little experience to national competitors. Our western team will debut this year!

Each team member participates in at least one lesson a week at the Meadows of Murfreesboro.

FAQ

Q: Do I need to try out for your team while I am applying to Vanderbilt?

A: No, we do not hold formal try outs at any time. Our team competes through IHSA

(www.ihsainc.com) and therefore accepts all levels of riders. After arriving at school, we host “trial

rides” where each prospective member gets a chance to ride with our coach and tour the farm.

Q: Do you recruit? Do you offer scholarships?

A: No, our team is a club sport at Vanderbilt. We therefore do not recruit and cannot offer athletic

scholarships to the university. Need-based scholarships for the team are, however, an option.

Q: Do I need to provide videos or my USEF record?

A: We do not need your videos or any show record. In the fall of your first semester, you will have to

submit your show record to IHSA to determine your division.

Q: How many people are on your team?

     A: Approximately 30 each year.

Q: How many people show?

     A: About 10-12 per show.

Q: What levels of riders does your team take?

A: IHSA shows offer classes from the Walk-Trot (little or no riding experience) all the way up to

Open Fences (6 blue ribbons at recognized shows over 3’6,” or, top 10 at Maclay Finals).

Q: Where do you ride? How do you get there? How often do you ride?

A: We ride with Brittany Lehmann out of the Meadows of Murfreesboro. At the beginning of each

semester we set up a carpool system. Show team members ride a minimum of two times / week,           non-showing members ride a minimum of once / week. There is no maximum number of rides!

Q: Is there a cost to joining the team?

A: Yes, we collect dues each year. Dues include the costs of lessons, and factors in the fees we

pay to IHSA and to the Meadows of Murfreesboro. Experience Vanderbilt Scholarships can be

     used.

WHAT DO I NEED?

For lessons, your attire can be as fun and colorful as you would like, while remaining professional and put together. Shirts should be polos or cadet collared, tucked in. Breeches should have a euro seat and be worn with a belt. A horse-riding specific helmet and healed riding boots must be worn.

Riding helmet. Please choose from these options, or check with a captain before buying something else because it matters for showing.

For lessons, your breeches can be as fun as you would like! Just make sure they have a euro seat (separately-stitched shaped seat of the same fabric as the rest of the breech; see seat stitching above).

Tall boots are ideal, and a must if you plan to show. If not, you can save some money by getting paddock boots + half chaps, but you can NOT show in them, so if you decide to show later on, you will have to buy tall boots anyways.

Hunter Show Attire

Hunter shows have a very specific, traditional uniform. This consists of fawn breeches, a white show shirt, navy or black coat, belt, black leather gloves, and tall boots. Your hair must be tucked neatly under your helmet in a hair net. Men will wear a white collared shirt and conservative tie rather than a show shirt under their hunt coat. Show clothes are worth spending extra on for brand names as they look much more professional and put together.
